U.S. Supreme Court Rules in Federal Prisoner "Good Time" Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has sided with the Government in a recent federal prisoner good time case. In Barber v. Thomas, the Court ruled that the Federal Bureau of Prisons correctly calculates that federal inmates should receive 47 days off for each year of a prison sentence actually served. Previously, federal inmates had been receiving 54 days off for each year of the sentence imposed by the court.
 U.S. prison system
In contrast to federal inmates, inmates in the Ohio prison system receive no good time credit off their sentences. Thus, a 1 year prison sentence means that the inmate must actually serve 1 year.
